Every piece begins as a lump of raw stoneware clay in the hands of a skilled artisan in Bolesławiec, Poland — a town whose pottery tradition flourished in the 19th century and never stopped.
What is UNIKAT?
UNIKAT — Polish for one of a kind — is the highest designation in Polish pottery. Each UNIKAT piece is entirely hand-painted by a single experienced artist.
Turn one over and you will find that artist's signature fired into the clay.
This is not mass production. It is a living craft.
The material and the making
Bolesławiec pottery is fired at very high temperatures, which makes it strong and long-lasting. It also keeps its bright, rich colors, which is a big part of what makes Polish pottery so recognizable.
Each piece is painted slowly and carefully. Artists use fine brushes and traditional sponge stamps to build up the design one layer at a time, adding peacock eyes, flowers, leaves, and patterned borders.

Zuzia's was founded out of a love for the craft and a wish to share it with homes across the United States. We are a small, curated shop — not a warehouse.
Every pattern we carry is hand-picked, and every piece is photographed on its own so you can see its true colors and details. Picking the pottery for my shop isn't something I rush. I look for a wide variety of pieces and patterns, so you'll find everything from everyday favorites to one-of-a-kind finds.
